Drive a truck sideways? Why not? Oshkosh's ALL STEER® all wheel
steering system allows a truck to literally drive sideways in one
of three distinct steering modes. In front steer mode the operator
uses conventional steering, with rear wheels locked in a straight-ahead
position. For tight corners and smaller spaces, the system allows
for coordinated steer mode, which turns the rear wheels in the opposite
direction of the front wheels, reducing the turning radius up to
30 percent. Finally, for maximum low-speed maneuverability around
obstacles or into tight spots, crab-steer mode, also called the
"crab walk," lets the rear wheels turn in the same direction
as the front wheels, allowing the vehicle to move sideways.
The ALL STEER system is electronically controlled directly from
the cab. It is designed for fail-safe operation with system interlocks
and a self-diagnostic troubleshooting system for enhanced safety
and reliability.
