TerraMax™ Makes History At DARPA Grand Challenge

As the midday sun baked the Nevada desert on October 9, 2005, Oshkosh Corporation was underscoring a powerful statement regarding its role in the future of advanced truck technology. TerraMax, the completely autonomous, unmanned truck built by Oshkosh in partnership with Rockwell Collins and the University of Parma, Italy, was thundering through 132 miles of brutal, merciless terrain en route to becoming the first tactical defense truck to ever finish the Pentagon’s DARPA Challenge.

As Oshkosh’s self-driving, self-navigating TerraMax rumbled across the finish line, a new era in ground transportation began.

Suddenly, unmanned vehicles capable of completing missions and keeping U.S. soldiers out of harm’s way are within arm’s reach of the U.S. military.

TerraMax is based on Oshkosh's Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) defense truck platform. The MTVR was designed for the US Marine Corps with a 70% off-road mission profile and can handle 60% grades and 30% side
slopes. Now, Oshkosh is taking the next step to integrate unmanned technology into a current U.S. Army heavy-payload model.
